Budding green fingers

Class 5 have been busy doing some gardening this week. They have been weeding and planting lots of different types of plants in the area outside of our class already for the summer.

Our final set of Tesco photos

It was the turn of Class 3 to go to Tesco on Friday and what a wonderful time they had!

Whoever thought going to Tesco with 15 children could be such fun!

Bikers’ Breakfast and Family Bike Ride

Bikers Breakfast
On Tuesday 21st April we are hosting a Bikers Breakfast for all those children, parents and staff who cycle or scoot to school. We are offering a free breakfast of croissants, juice and fresh fruit and this will take place in the junior playground between 8:15 to 8:45 am (Please note, this will be on a first come first served basis so it may be advisable to eat something before you arrive at school) Tom King, our new bike it officer will lead a cycle skill session in the playground for children to participate in and parents are invited to join in too. Following the breakfast we will then be having our family bike ride which is for junior children only and their parents. Please let us know if you are coming to the breakfast so that we can buy enough croissants and juice either through the parents evening system or by contacting the office by noon on Monday

Family Bike Ride
On Tuesday 21st April we are also inviting parents and junior children to join us on a family bike ride to Thames Chase. (We walk to Pike lane and cycle from there avoiding cycling on St Mary’s Lane) The ride will be led by Tom King who is our new bike-it officer and will be accompanied by Ms Rowles and Miss Hunt. The ride should take about an hour. If you would like to take part please book a place via the parent evening booking system www.thejamesoglethorpe.parentseveningsystem.co.uk or contact the school office by noon on Monday. All children must wear a helmet. We do have a selection of bikes for different age groups available should you wish to take part but don’t have a bike. These are available on a first come first served basis, so do let us know if you would like to borrow one of our pool bikes.

Safety Talk from TFL

As our children make the move to their secondary schools, they will become increasingly independent whilst travelling. Transport For London came in and gave an excellent talk to the Year 6 children about travelling safely on the bus, tube and train network. There were some hard hitting videos which really brought the safety messages home and showed the year 6 children how to be responsibly whilst travelling.

Welcome to all our new families

It is National Offer Day for Primary School Places and if you have been offered a place at our school we are delighted and are looking forward to welcoming you into our school community.
There will be an information meeting for parents on Tuesday 23rd June at 7:15 p.m. and an opportunity later that week for our new reception children to visit. If however, you would like to have a tour of the school with your child before June, please contact the school office to book an appointment.

Whole school

Look who came to school today!

Our reception and year 1 & 2 children have had an amazing time getting close to the farm animals that visited us in school today.

From farm to fork

Year 1 and 2 are spending this week visiting Tesco’s Gallows Corner. Today was the turn of Class 5 who had a wonderful day at Tesco’s Gallows Corner where they under took a Farm to Fork session, led by Clover Deacon. They were able to go behind the scenes and see Tesco’s from a different perspective, in order to help them understand where food comes from.

They first visited the bakery where they each made a roll, this was then cooked and ready for them to bring back to school. They saw the bread being packaged and discussed how bread is made and the ingredients used in it. They were able to ask questions to the bakers about how many loaves and rolls are made each day, they were also shown and smelt the yeast. Finally, they saw the proving ovens and then went to see the hot ovens where they talked about safety.

Following the bakery they visited the deli counter where they were able to talk about where milk comes from and how this is used to make cheese. The children had the opportunity to taste cheddar cheese, blue cheese, Brie, Feta Cheese and mozzarella cheese on a pizza.

Then, the children visited the fishmonger, where they were able to hold a fish and had a demonstration of how to prepare a fish ready for sale. They asked the fishmonger questions about how often the fish are caught and why the fish are kept in ice? They looked and talked about salmon, tuna, oysters, mussels, prawns and mackerel.

Next, the children went behind the scenes to see how food is stored. They talked about the temperatures of the fridge and freezer and had the opportunity to actually go inside them to feel the temperature. They discussed the sorts of food that would be kept in each and why some food has to be kept cold.

Finally, the children saw the ‘back door’ where the lorry delivers the food to the store. The children were then taken up to the canteen where they completed a questionnaire about what they learnt, were offered some hot cross bun and a drink and each child received a certificate and a goody bag containing a pencil case, a ball, some raisins and a sheet of stickers.

All of the children thoroughly enjoyed the day and they all now say that they ‘”love Tesco’s” Clover Deacon was a fantastic host who made it fun, interesting and exciting for the children. All in all a fantastic day had by all and a huge thank you to Tesco for this opportunity.
