Parliamentary Flag Competition

Pentax Digital CameraWe have made a press release this morning about our involvement in the Nationwide flag competition.

The James Oglethorpe Primary School in Upminster has been revealed as one of 650 schools selected from across the United Kingdom to take part in a unique project that aims to connect young people with the democratic process and heritage.

In 2015 the Houses of Parliament will be celebrating two historic anniversaries that signify the beginnings of a journey to rights and representation in the UK, namely the 800th year of the sealing of the Magna Carta (1215) and the 750th anniversary of the Simon de Montfort parliament (1265).

Dame Angela Watkinson, MP for Hornchurch and Upmnister, nominated The James Oglethorpe Primary School from amongst those in her constituency and the school were delighted to accept the creative challenge.

Mrs Paula Sewell, Acting Deputy Head, commented, ‘This was a fascinating event for the children to learn more about our local history as we drew inspiration from images from around the constituency.’

Finally, Year 5 and 6 children competed to produce the winning flag design to be submitted to Parliament. The winning team consisted of a group of Year 6 children: Elliott Bartells, Annah Dyett-Meade, Maisie Harvey, Luke Nixon, Marnie Manning and Oliver Murray.
Their design includes a plane representing RAF Hornchurch, home to The Fighter Command’s Group 11 during WWII; the children thought it was important to honour the Battle of Britain pilots.

It shows images of sound waves, as the first test of the speed of sound happened at St Laurence Church (measurements were made from a number of local landmarks, including North Ockendon church.) A District Line tube sign has also been included, as this constituency has built up as a result of the impact of the underground and of course, no flag would be complete without the iconic Upminster Windmill.

Children chose the colours of red, to represent the Cranham Brickfields (and our school colour), white, for England and a colour in the union flag, and green, to show that we are surrounded by green fields and represents the District Line railway.

Ms. Deborah Rowles, Head teacher, added, ‘We were delighted to be nominated to represent the constituency and have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this project. As James Oglethorpe himself was a parliamentarian, we feel that we are carrying on a long tradition.’

Flags from all the selected schools across the UK will ‘fly’ online via a digital exhibition which you can visit at: www.parliament.uk/2015flaghub

Spring Term Citizenship Award

PMarjorie Sorrell was a governor of the school for many years and retired as Chair of Governors in August 2000.

On her retirement she wished to offer the school the opportunity to award a cup at the end of each term to a nominated child who had demonstrated the attributes of “Good Citizenship”.

Attributes of Good Citizenship appear in many forms.

  • Someone helpful to others
  • Friendly to everyone
  • To be a good role model to others, e.g. good attendance, smart uniform and good behaviour
  • Setting a good example for other children
  • Represent the school in doing tasks or jobs
  • Someone who has overcome or coped with a special difficulty
  • Someone who has put forward an idea that has a positive impact on the school or the wider community e.g. a charity event

This term’s citizenship award has been presented to Ben in year 4. He is an excellent role model to others, in and out of the classroom. Out of class, adults who encounter Ben comment on how polite, friendly and helpful he is. Ben uses his excellent sportsmanship attitude to its full potential – always encouraging his peers to do their best.

Our congratulations to Ben.

Eclipse Day – what a fantastic experience!

The whole school went out on the field around 9.15 am today to experience the amazing phenomenon of a partial eclipse of the sun.

We had spent hours yesterday afternoon making pin hole cameras from cereal boxes and were determined to get our use out of them. The cloud had other ideas and although we tried and tried we just couldn’t ‘see’ anything.

Never mind we watched the BBC live link in our classrooms and saw the moon moving over the sun. We certainly experienced how weird it is though and had to wrap up warm because once the sun got covered it went very cold and quite dark. Very Eerie. What a fabulous start to our day.Learn Along Mar15 029 Learn Along Mar15 030 Learn Along Mar15 031 Learn Along Mar15 032 Learn Along Mar15 033 Learn Along Mar15 034 Learn Along Mar15 035 Learn Along Mar15 036 Learn Along Mar15 037 Learn Along Mar15 038 Learn Along Mar15 039 Learn Along Mar15 040

Year 5 Spelling Bee

Today was the turn of Year 5 to take part in the Annual Spelling Bee competition at Engayne. As usual it was a very tense competition with 3 of our Year 5s and a mix of Year 5 and 6 from Engayne taking part.
Briony did very well but fell foul in the third round with the word electrically; Samuel got into the fourth round, taking fourth place, finishing on the word government. Our spelling bee superstar was Hani who got through to the final round and then won the competition overall with her final word aerodynamic. She received the Spelling Bee cup and a spelling game!

We were very proud of the fantastic sportsmanlike behaviour from the whole of year 5 who had gone along to support the team, and their behaviour walking to and from Engayne.
Well done everyone

JOPSPA Meeting 18th March

Don’t forget the James Oglethorpe Primary School Parents Association (JOPSPA) meeting is planned for tomorrow, Wednesday 18th March at 1.30 pm at the school.

There are a lot of events coming up – why don’t you come along to see how you could be involved? We discuss what events are planned, give feedback on previous events, look into new fundraising ideas, and discuss what items the school has requested us to help fund. Our big fundraiser coming up is the Summer Fair Inflatable Extravaganza on Friday 3rd July and we would welcome any new ideas or any suggestions on what we do on the day. If you have some time to kill this Wednesday afternoon before the children finish school, please just pop along. As stressed previously, we really do need some parents to come forward to bolster our numbers and keep the PA running. Any help, whether its just a couple of hours here and there, is most appreciated.

We look forward to seeing you.

Swimming Superstars

Our swimming superstars have been amazing at Abbs Cross Swimming Gala. We came in the top three positions for many of our heats including an impressive first for girls backstroke, but narrowly missed out on the final by a tenth of a second! Huge thank you to the supportive parents and the team for making this such a fab event. Miss Hunt.

Solar Eclipse 20th March 2015

In the morning of Friday 20th March 2015 a total eclipse of the sun will be visible all over the UK. It is very dangerous to look directly at the sun but in school we are going to be making pinhole cameras so that children can view the eclipse safely. Can you send in a shoebox or cereal box in order that your child can make their own pinhole camera on Wednesday or Thursday in preparation for Friday’s eclipse.h

Science Week 2015

All through the week we will keep you updated with lots of photos from science week.
Mrs Dehavilland kicked us off with a fantastic assembly this morning – lots of awe and wonder going on in school.
