Parliamentary representatives for Upminster and Hornchurch!

We are extremely excited about a new project we have been asked to join in with.

In 2015, Parliament will be celebrating two historic anniversaries that signify the beginnings of a journey to rights and representation in the UK, namely the 800th year of the sealing of Magna Carta and the 750th anniversary of the Simon de Montfort Parliament.

To mark the anniversary of the Montfort Parliament of 1265, where elected representatives of the shires and the Burgesses came together for the first time, the 2015 Flag Project has invited 650 schools, one from every constituency, to design a flag to represent where they live.

Dame Angela Watkinson who is our MP has asked our school to represent her constituency and as you can imagine we are thrilled at the honour.

In school, we are going to be asking every child to think about the area of Hornchurch and Upminster and come up with drawings that represent the whole of the constituency. Here at school, we are obviously well versed in the history of Cranham and James Oglethorpe with his links to Georgia, but this constituency covers the site of the old Hornchurch aerodrome – In the first half of the 20th century RAF Hornchurch was among the country’s most important military airfields. Pilots stationed at Hornchurch became national heroes in both World Wars and in the summer of 1940 during the Battle of Britain it was in the front line of the country’s defence as one of Fighter Command’s key aerodromes. We also have one of our iconic images of Upminster windmill and did you know that one of the first experiments to prove the Speed of Sound was carried out from the top of the tower at St Lawrence Church?

Once we have our drawings in place, we will then use some of our artists to put together a collage of images that represents our constituency. This has to be completed and uploaded by December 1st and will be available to view by the general public in March 2015. The best designs will actually be made into a flag so we really do want to push this boat out.Dame Angela Watkinson

House Captains and Vice Captains

We are thrilled to present the House Captains for the coming year along with their Vice Captains.

These children will lead each of our four House Teams; Augusta, Port Royal, Savannah and Frederica in the daily House Challenge Cup, on Sports Day and during numerous other events across the school year.

They were voted into office by the children in their House Team and should feel very proud of their achievement.

Have a great year and we really hope you enjoy the role.

School Council 2014-2015

Welcome and congratulations to the brand new James Oglethorpe Primary School Council.

Children had to write and deliver a speech telling their classmates why they wanted to be on the Council and pupils voted for two representatives from each class to help take the school forward.

The Council will be led by Miss Hunt this year who is looking forward to getting her teeth into some new projects.

Good Luck and thank you for what you are about to do!
