Tissues at the Ready…

Our goodbye tears have started already as we begin to say goodbye to our year 6 pupils and to some of our staff. Mrs Wickendon has written this blog as she prepares to start the next stage in her career:

I wanted to post a blog to say a huge thanks to all the children, staff and parents who have made the last three years amazing.  I have got to know so many amazing children during my time here. I would like to say huge thanks to all the parents who have supported all the children in my classes over the past three years. For those of you that I have had on speed dial, many thanks!!

A thank you poem from me to you

To say huge thanks for all that you do

JOPS kids are talented and very smart

Everyone has stole my heart

They are loud they are funny so amazingly cool

A credit to you and our school

Every day has been a blast

Three years here have gone so fast

The kids have taught me more than you know

Like making igloos in the snow

They will all be stars in their own unique way

Who rise to challenge come what may

I’m very proud to have met them all

Enjoy your summer have a ball.

Bonjour from Paris, Hornchurch

Bonjour!  30 pupils from Year 3 to 5 accompanied me to the Europa Centre in Hornchurch last Friday to try out their French!  They were escorted round the mock French town by native French speakers and had the opportunity to try out their language skills in different shops.  The highlight appears to have been the cafe where they were able to order real food and drink!  Despite being initally a little overwhelmed by the rapid French spoken by the Europa Cente staff, pupils behaved perfectly and I congratulate them for their bravery in doing their best to respond!  From Mrs Smith
“At the Europa Centre we went into a French village.  When in the shops we had to speak in French.  It was very good listening to someone who knew proper French.  We would recommend that you go on this trip if you are in KS2.  Merci!” From Samantha, Bethany, Rea and Grace – Year 5

The James Oglethorpe Citizenship award

THE MARJORIE SORRELL GOOD CITIZEN AWARD

030

Marjorie Sorrell was a governor of the school for many years and retired as Chair of Governors in August 2000.

On her retirement she wished to offer the school the opportunity to award a cup at the end of each term to a nominated child who had demonstrated the attributes of “Good Citizenship”.

Attributes of Good Citizenship appear in many forms.

  • Someone helpful to others
  • Friendly to everyone
  • To be a good role model to others, e.g. good attendance, smart uniform and good behaviour
  • Setting a good example for other children
  • Represent the school in doing tasks or jobs
  • Someone who has overcome or coped with a special difficulty
  • Someone who has put forward an idea that has a positive impact on the school or the wider community e.g. a charity event
The award was presented to Luke Nixon in class 7. Mrs Wickendon has said that Luke is a credit to our class and to the school.
Well done Luke for displaying team skills, consideration, hard work and excellent behaviour.

Class 7

Well done to all the children in class 7 for their hard work and determination in their weekly times tables challenge.
Their learning challenge back in September was to learn all their times tables and related divisions up to 12. They had 8 minutes to complete a sheet of 100 mixed sums, 9 minutes to complete a sheet of 150 mixed sums and 10 minutes to complete 200 mixed sums. We have had 100% success rate in the class with ALL children meeting and exceeeding their targets.
A big thankyou parents for all your help as well as a huge thank you to the class 7 times tables buddies for motivating their friends.

Class 7, 8 and 9

This term the children have been reading the novel, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. They have produced some amazing work as a result in literacy and as a part of their creative topic.

Parents do you remember Barry Norman, the film reviewer back in the day?? (Or am I showing my age?)

In school children today had the opportunity to watch the film The Iron Giant based on the book by Ted Hughes. Their learning objective during the film was to make notes looking for similarities and differences between the film and the book.

This will form part of their literacy lessons next week when they have to write a detailed film review based on what they saw.

Parents if you know a film is based on a book, encourage your child to read, or read the book to them as well as watching the film.  The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; Charlotte’s Web; Diary of a Wimpy Kid; Harry Potter are just a few examples that spring to mind.

The more children read the greater the impact on their writing. Even junior children still love to be read to. (You would not believe how quiet your children are during class reading time!!)

Hopefully we may be able to post some film reviews next week, so watch this space.

Class 7 and Class 8

During PE this week the children have been developing their throwing and catching skills in order to improve the game “5 pass”.  The children can explain the rules this evening.  It’s a fast paced game which will have you out of breath!!

The children also had to evaluate their performance to decide if they were a level 2, 3 or 4 and what skills they needed to work on as their individual PE targets. Some of the children were selected to lead the warm, up and act as coaches at the start of the session in order to up level every child’s performance in the session.

They all showed great team spirit supporting and motivating their class mates.

Well done 7 and 8

Mrs Wickenden and Mrs Blake.

Stubbers!

What an amazing day we have had. It really is like Winmarleigh re-visited; the children have been so well behaved and we have laughed with them and on occasion at them!  Photos will be on the entrance hail screen on Monday and on the big screen during Friday’s cream tea.

Super Sports Day

Didn’t we have the most wonderful day on Wednesday? SPORTS DAY 2013. It was a day to use our ‘active’ verbs because we were jumping, running, throwing, catching, skipping, chasing, hopping, scoring, cheering, winning, racing, starting, stopping, smiling and clapping. The sun shone, there was a bright blue sky and then a lovely cooling breeze (or was that just when the teachers whizzed by us in the Dressing Up Race?). We couldn’t be more proud of how the children behaved themselves.  I had a visitor with me when I came out onto the patio early in the day. She remarked that the behaviour of the children was outstanding. The James Oglethorpe Sports Challenge Cup Port Royal Sports Day Winnerswent to Port Royal House (blue) with a whopping 11,979 points. Well done to everyone who helped make it such a special day. Ms Rowles

Class 7 – Fun in the Sun.

In science we have been learning about light and shadows. As we now have glorious weather we were able to investigate shadows in greater detail. We linked the science to our maths. The children had to make a prediction about what would happen to their shadow during the course of the day.

They drew around their friend’s shadow and recorded their findings in centimetres and metres. This has been repeated during the course of the day. Tomorrow the children will present this data in the form of bar charts.

They will then look back over their predictions to see if they were correct.

Parent’s- What do you think happens to a shadow during the day and why?
